Lucas will get a brother or sister!

In about six months, Lucas will get a little brother or sister! To be more precise, I'm 13 weeks and 3 days pregnant now and the due date is June 5, 2010. We already had an appointment at our own doctor and we had our first ultrasound to check if everything is ok and to determine the due date. In a few weeks, we will have our first appointment with a midwife as well. The check ups in Denmark are done by your own doctor as well as a midwife. It is actually quite different than what we were used to in Switzerland.

Luckily, I'm feeling well again. From week 5 until week 12 I was quite nauseous.

Below, you can see the ultrasound of our little "Lille" (Danish for "little"), which is how we call our new little one. He (or she of course) is about 6 cm.

Our Lucas is still doing great. He is a very sweet boy! Without any prejudice I can honestly say he is most likely the sweetest and most beautiful boy who is ever born!

After a long day, we were finally able to hold our Kleintje in our hands yesterday evening just before midnight. Our Kleintje is now called Lucas. He weights 3700 grams and is 54 cm tall. Both Lucas and Hanneke are doing well.

Hanneke's belly has now pretty much reached its maximum size. It also seems to be lower than before indicating that Kleintje is getting ready to look for the exit. 39 weeks pregnant: check-up in hospital

Today, we went to the hospital for a regular check-up during which they monitored the baby for a while (CTG) and checked if Hanneke was doing well. The gynecologist also did an ultrasound to check out Kleintje and to estimate his weight. As we of course expected, our little one gained some weight compared to the previous check-up and now weighs almost 3.8 kilos. Now, we just keep on waiting until Kleintje is ready to join our family. Whatever he decides, we are ready--well, to the extent that is possible.

Boy or girl? Part 2

After the previous message in which we discussed the results of the poll asking whether we will get a boy or a girl, the results stayed remarkably consistent. At that time, already 4 months ago, a total number of 30 people voted of whom 63% (N=19) expected us to have a boy. Today, after 70 people voted, 61% (N=43) of the voters still believe that we will get a boy. Of course, it is possible that the same people voted two or three times but we trust the people that is not the case (not that much at least). To be sure, we still don't know the gender and like the fact that it is a surprise (although it is testing our patience). But if we have to believe the "wisdom of crowds" we might have an idea what to expect. Let's see in a few weeks if the voters were right (or lucky).

Belly at 37-38 weeks pregnant

In line with our once-a-month-belly-picture, this is Hanneke at about 37-38 weeks pregnant. Given the fact that this is the final stage in the pregnancy, there is a good chance this will be the last picture in this "series". But there is no need to be sad as we will be able to put some "real" baby pictures once Kleintje is born.

36 weeks pregnant: check-up with ultrasound

On our first wedding anniversary (!) we had our final check-up with the gynecologist. The next time (if our Kleintje is still in Hanneke's belly) we have to go to the hospital in Morges where we will also go for the delivery. In addition to some checks, the gynecologist also did an ultrasound (we don't have a picture this time) to check if Kleintje was all right. His heart beat was around 160 beats per minute and we also got another estimate of his weight: 3,3 kilos! Now let's see how long Kleintje will enjoy himself in there and when he decides to come out...

Babyshower

My colleagues organized a surprise babyshower for me (and Hanneke of course) and for a colleague who is pregnant as well. It was a really nice surprise! We got a lot of great presents but we first had to answer a couple of pregnancy- and baby-related question. Fortunately, I am very knowledgeable about these issues *cough* and I was therefore able to answer the questions (at least good enough to get my presents)!

We had another appointment with the gynecologist. This time he estimated the weight of our Kleintje by measuring his head, his belly and his thigh bone. Already at this stage of the pregnancy Kleintje weighs 2290 grams, what is quite heavy for now. Let's say he's just a big eater. His heartbeat was ok, it was 147 beats per minute.

This Saturday we did a non-medical ultrasound for the second time (this time at Echobaby in Crissier). One reason was that my parents were visiting and another was that the previous time we tried three dimensional ultrasound, it didn't work very well. This time our Kleintje was much more developed and the 3D picture was a lot clearer. We received quite a few nice pictures and some videos. It was not that easy because Kleintje was a bit shy and covered his face with his arms (or even feet) most of the time. But we were able to spend enough time to get a good picture of our little baby. It is pretty impressive that you can see so much detail on the picture! Isn't our Kleintje the most beautiful baby you've ever seen?

Belly at 29 weeks pregnant

This is my belly at about 29 weeks pregnant. Now I think it can officially be called a real pregnancy belly. Kleintje is also still very active at certain moments. His moves and kicks are now very well noticeable. Sometimes he give me a very strong kick or punch! But of course I don't mind that (yet).

A nice present, but for whom?

The other day Hanneke brought a present but the question is for whom the present is. Is it for Kleintje or perhaps for the future dad? In any case, it will surely come in handy when Kleintje and his family are supporting the Dutch team during the European football Championship this June in Switzerland. Hup Holland Hup!

27-28 weeks pregnant: check-up (with ultrasound) and preparatory course

Today was a busy day for our little one (and inevitably for us too). We had to go to the gynecologist for a regular appointment and we had our second pregnancy class.

Before the check-up, Hanneke had to drink some kind of sugary drink in order to check possible problems with (pregnancy) diabetes. To check this, they tested Hanneke's blood which she had to give one hour later. As always, they also checked the usual suspects such as toxoplasmosis and iron level. During the actual check-up the gynecologist checked our Kleintje. He was positioned with his head up, his hands in front of his face and his legs folded. Well, admittedly, having his legs stretched would be rather difficult as he is taking more and more space in Hanneke's womb. Still, as Hanneke notices very well, he seems to be trying it quite a lot. On the ultrasound everything looked fine and we got another image of our Kleintje's little face. On the picture you can also see this, although it is not entirely clear. On the left, you can see the contours of his face with his eyes, nose and mouth. He still had two arms and two legs and the other things that are supposed to be there. We also heard again his heart beating with 150 beats a minute.

Later during the day, we went to the "pregancy course" in the hospital of Morges. This was the second session with the midwife who explained some more procedures of a delivery and answered our questions. She also showed a video and showed us the hospital's delivery rooms. It was quite useful to see these kinds of things because it allows us to get a better picture of the upcoming birth of our Kleintje.

Update: the blood test showed that Hanneke's iron level was too low, which explaines why she has been feeling so tired. Because of this, she has to go to a clinic in Lausanne where extra iron will be put into her blood by infusion. The other tests (e.g. diabetes) were good.

Kleintje's first class

Today Kleintje had his first class. Well, technically it was a pregnancy course to prepare the parents-to-be for delivery. It was in the hospital of Morges where we will also go for the delivery. We were with seven other couples that are going to have a baby in a few months as well. It was an interesting session that provided some basic information. Nothing groundbreaking of course but it was very good to have the various procedures discussed. This helps people to know what to expect and therefore be better prepared. And although he didn't pay attention all the time, our Kleintje did very well during his first lecture!

Kleintje's heart beat

On this video, you can hear the heart beat of our little Kleintje. It lies around 145 beats per minute. The average of a fetal heart beat is between 120 and 160 per minute.

3D/4D ultrasound video

This video is a part of the 3D ultrasound. As you can see on the videos, it doesn't really look nice. In fact, it doesn't look nice at all and the two 2D ultrasound is much nicer in our case. The video was made around 20 weeks pregnant, which was a bit too early--especially because the baby was lying quite close to the placenta, making it even more difficult to get a good 3D picture. Again, it doesn't look really nice, so don't be scared if you think our baby is trying to get into Scary Movie...

The first movie shows the face mostly as a kind of mask or skeleton. The second movie shows the outlines of the face (and the rest of the body, e.g. arms) but it is not perfect (although I already find it quite impressive what they can show at this stage). This ultrasound was made on January 2nd when Hanneke was about 20 weeks pregnant.

check-up (25-26 weeks pregnant)

Today we had a check up again. The gynecologist made an ultrasound again and, although Kleintje didn't make it easy for him this time either, he finally saw the 'missing' arm. The gynecologist looked at the rest of Kleintje as well and our little one is still doing ok! Even though nowadays they can see already a lot on an ultrasound, only about 30% of malformations/malfunctions can be detected. But of course we already think that is quite a lot and we are very happy to be able to see that much of our little one. In a few weeks, we will have the next appointment. In the meanwhile, we will try to keep you updated how things are going and put some more ultrasound videos online.

Umbilical cord and blood vessels

On this video (from the ultrasound on January 2nd), you can see the different blood vessels that enter Kleintje's body from his umbilical cord.

The explanations in Dutch are more or less the following: It is first shown that the umbilical cord enters the belly. That is where the nutrients and the oxygen enter the body. In the bottom of the belly, there is a full bladder. There are two vessels around the bladder. It takes a while because the baby is quite active. (At that time, Hanneke didn't feel anything yet.) There are three vessels in the umbilical cord (see different colors on the video).

24-25 weeks pregnant (check-up with ultrasound)

Today, we (finally) had our next check-up with the gynecologist. (Finally, because the last one was a while ago and this one was postponed by one week.) This time we had an extensive ultrasound during which the gynecologist checked almost every detail of our little Kleintje. He checked the spine, the brain, the heart, the stomach, the bladder, the kidneys, and all those kinds of things. He also took pictures of all of them for his records. He confirmed us that everything was just fine with the baby, which is of course always good to hear. He did some measures of the baby and it looked like he is around 25 weeks old but it remains a rough estimate. A funny thing though was that our Kleintje did not show one of his arms on the ultrasound, even after the gynecologist tried really hard to get him moving (you can ask Hanneke about this, hehe)! The arm was probably hidden behind his head and therefore invisible on the ultrasound. Because the gynecologist really wants to see every part of the baby, Hanneke has to come back in one week. Of course, we don't mind seeing our little one again!

Ultrasound video (at 20 weeks pregnant)

I finally managed to put a part of the ultrasound video on our blog. As described before, this ultrasound was made on January 2nd in Holland when Hanneke was about 20 weeks pregnant. That is, according to the lady, she was 20 weeks but "officially" it was more like 18 weeks. We will have to check this with the gynecologist during the next ultrasound. In any case, the ultrasound of the video was done four weeks ago.

On the video of about one minute, you can see our Kleintje in Hanneke's womb. You can see he is swallowing the amniotic fluid. (At this stage, he still has quite some space in the uterus.) The lady also points to his arms and ribs (all in Dutch). Kleintje is also stretching (you can also see he is moving his arms and legs). You can also see his heart beating. All-in-all, it is pretty amazing to see!

belly at 22+ weeks pregnant

Now that I am somewhere between 22 and 24 weeks pregnant (depending on which estimate we use), my belly really starts to grow and show! I also feel our Kleintje more frequently! For example, late in the evening he is usually awake. But also at other moments during the day I can feel him splashing around and giving me little kicks. We sometimes try to talk, sing or play music for him and it even looks like he is occasionally reacting to that!
